León started singing in the childrens choir of Mérida, Yucatán following a family tradition. In his austrian family there have been former Vienna Boys Choir members aswell as conductors, organists and music teachers.

debütierte mit 5 Jahren in Mexiko und mit 8 Jahren in Wien als Solist der Mozart Sängerknaben in der Wiener Volksoper, in der Wiener Staatsoper sowie bei Konzerten im Wiener Musikverein und im Wiener Konzerthaus. 2007 begann er sein Studium an der Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien bei Karlheinz Hanser und Gabriele Lechner und debütierte 2008 an der Seite Plácido Domingos und Patricia Petibons in der Zarzuela Luisa Fernanda im Theater an der Wien.
2010 singt er als Thug in Il Postino an der Seite von Plácido Domingo und Cristina Gallardo-Domâs erneut im Theater an der Wien sang.
Ebendort war er auch als Wachtmeister in Hans Werner Henzes Prinz von Homburg mit Christian Gerhaher und 2011 als Mars in einer adaptierten Version von Georg Friedrich Händels Rynaldo beim Life Ball und als Melibeo in Joseph Haydns La fedelta premiata zu sehen.
2012 debütierte er im Wiener Musikverein an der Seite von Ildikó Raimondi und im Palacio de Bellas Artes (Staatsoper Mexiko) an der Seite von Encarnación Vazquez; sang Alfred in Die Fledermaus im Teatro Peón Contreras, Liederabende mit dem Österreichischen Kulturforum, Arienkonzerte mit symphonischen Orchestern etc.
2013 sang er erneut im Palacio de Bellas Artes und debütierte im Wiener Konzerthaus in einem Solokonzert. Im März 2013 gründete er eine Konzertreihe, die sich auf den mexikanischen Protest gegen den Anschluss Österreichs konzentrierte, und das Primavera Festival Wien.
Zusammen mit seinem Kammerorchester Valsassina Ensemble Wien konzertierte er 2014 im Rahmen des Primavera Festival Wien im Wiener Musikverein, in der UNO-City, an der Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien, in der Französischen Botschaft Wien und anschließend in Mexiko und in den USA.
Auf dieser Tournee debütierten sie gemeinsam unter anderem in der Sala Nezahualcóyotl und im Schloss Chapultepec in Mexiko City und in der Carnegie Hall in New York City. Dieses junge Kammerorchester schaffte es innerhalb der ersten 14 Monate ihrer Konzerttätigkeit ins Wiener Konzerthaus, in den Wiener Musikverein, in den Palacio de Bellas Artes und in die Carnegie Hall.
Während der Saison 2015/2016 wurde eine neuerliche Tournee des Valsassina Ensembles nach Mexiko organisiert. Es folgten Auftritte im Teatro de la Ciudad Playa del Carmen, Casa de la Cultura Isla Mujeres, Teatro Juan de la Cabada Campeche, Hacienda Paraíso Komchen und im Teatro Peón Contreras. Während diesen Konzerten konnten Werke vom mexikanischen Komponisten Roberto Abraham uraufgeführt werden.
Er gründete zusammen mit Univ. Prof. Dr. Gerold Gruber und nach Absprache mit dem Musikverlag Doblinger und den Nachlassverwaltern bzw. Rechteinhabern von Marcel Rubin auch das Marcel Rubin Quartett, mit dem er unter anderem in Paris in der Maison Heinrich Heine, in New York City in der Carnegie Hall, in Mexiko City im Museo Nacional de San Carlos, in Basel in der Kunsthalle Basel und in Wien im Schlosstheater Schönbrunn auftritt.
León de Castillo singt auch Deutsches Lied, Mélodies, Canciones in 8 Sprachen – sein Repertoire beinhaltet verschiedene Liederzyklen wie Franz Schuberts Schwanengesang, Robert Schumanns Dichterliebe, Erich Wolfgang Korngolds Songs of the Clown, Gustav Mahlers Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen, Hanns Eislers Ernste Gesänge etc. Er sang Liederabende in Österreich, Mexiko, USA, England, Frankreich, Spanien, Tschechien, Slowenien, Slowakei, Ungarn, Schweiz, Norwegen, Polen, Deutschland usw.
Zusammen mit dem Musikwissenschaftler, Universitätsprofessor und Leiter des Wissenschaftszentrums M.A.E.D. (Music Analysis and Exile Documentation Research Center) Gerold Gruber forschte de Castillo über österreichische und deutsche Künstler, die während des Zweiten Weltkrieges mit der Hilfe des als „mexikanischer Schindler“ bekannten Generalkonsuls Gilberto Bosques über Frankreich nach Mexiko fliehen konnten.
Unter den bekanntesten Persönlichkeiten, die aus dessen Händen einen Migrationspass erhielten, waren der aus Prag stammende Altösterreicher Egon Erwin Kisch (der „rasende Reporter“), die deutsche Schriftstellerin Anna Seghers und der österreichische Komponist Marcel Rubin.
Im Jahr 2013 sang de Castillo in einem Projekt der UN Women am Internationalen Frauentag in der UNO-City Wien, am 19. März (Tag des mexikanischen Protestes gegen den Anschluss Österreichs) in der Diplomatischen Akademie Wien und am 21. März (Internationaler Tag gegen Rassismus) wieder in der UNO-City in Wien. Diese drei Tage wurden daher die wichtigsten Veranstaltungstage und somit wurde das Menschenrechtsfestival Primavera Festival Wien geboren.
2014 fanden an diesen Welttagen Konzerte in der UNO-City Wien, in der Diplomatischen Akademie Wien, im Wiener Musikverein, an der Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien und in der Französischen Botschaft Wien statt. Somit entschied sich de Castillo als Intendant des Festivals für eine Fokussierung des Repertoires auf Kompositionen diskriminierter Komponisten wie zum Beispiel Exilkomponisten als auch auf Werke verschiedener Komponistinnen.
Er arbeitete mit Dirigenten wie Jesús López Cobos, Marc Albrecht, Josep Caballé Domenech, Christof Ulrich Meier, Orchestern wie z. B. Wiener Symphoniker, Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien, Regisseuren wie Patrice Chéreau, Christof Loy, Emilio Sagi, Ron Daniels, Horacio Almada, Paul Esterházy, Pianisten wie z. B. Matthias Lademann, Christian Koch, Marcin Kocziel etc.

was born in Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico, the son of a Mexican mother and an Austrian father. Several generations of his father's family were involved in music in different ways such as: singing in the Vienna Boys' Choir and other choirs, as conductors (Kapellmeister), and organists.
His career began at the age of five when he sang in a boys' choir in Mérida, Mexico. Later, in Vienna, he passed the audition at the Mozart Boys' Choir of Vienna and participated in various tours around Europe, and to South America and Asia. He also performed in various operas with the Vienna State Opera and Vienna Volksoper, and performed at numerous festivals including the Vienna Festival.
After graduating high school with honors, he decided to study communication studies, political science, and Romance philology (German: Lang de Publizistik, Politikwissenschaft und Romanistik). In 2007, he passed the entry exam and began studying singing at the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna, with the headmaster of the institute for singers, Karlheinz Hanser and the vice director Gabriele Lechner. While there, he also studied opera with the musical supervisor of the Bayreuth Festival, Christoph Ulrich Meier.
Only one year after beginning his singing studies, he debuted as a soloist at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna, sharing the stage with Plácido Domingo and Patricia Petitbon in the Zarzuela Luisa Fernanda. He also sang other operas at the Theater an der Wien. In 2009, he performed the role of Wachtmeister in the opera Prinz von Homburg with Christian Gerhaher.
He appeared in 2010 with Plácido Domingo and Cristina Gallardo-Domâs as the Thug in the opera Il postino by Mexican composer Daniel Catán. In 2011, he performed the role of Melibeo in Joseph Haydns La fedeltà premiata and participated in Christian Gerhaher's master class at the SWR Festival in Germany. He also participated in Anssi Hirvonen's master class for Finnish Lied Repertoire at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland. He performed at the opening of the Life Ball charity event in Vienna, performing as Mars, the Roman god of war, in the adapted version of G. F. Händel's opera Rinaldo at the Rathausplatz in Vienna. He sang as part of the Gustav Mahler Festival and Exil.
At the end of 2011, he returned to his Mexican hometown of Mérida. He dedicated 2012 as the year of Mayan culture in Mexico and sang a solo concert at the Teatro Jose Peón Contreras, his first concert of the year, on January 5, inaugurating the celebration festival of the 470th anniversary of Mérida. In 2012, he had his debut at the Palacio de Bellas Artes (State Opera in Mexico) beside the mezzo-soprano, Encarnación Vazquez, a project with the Austrian Culture Forum in Mexico.
He also sang in recitals at the Concert Hall of the National Museum of Art, Teatro Armando Manzanero and performed the role of Alfred in the Pperetta Die Fledermaus at the Teatro Peón Contreras with the Synfonic Orchestra of Yucatán. His debut at the Brahms-Saal of the Wiener Musikverein was singing with the soprano, Ildiko Raimondi. In 2013, he sang at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, and had his debut at the Wiener Konzerthaus, Vienna, singing a solo concert.
Together with his chamber orchestra, Valsassina Ensemble Vienna, he has performed at the Konzerthaus and Musikverein in Vienna, and in other Austrian concert halls. In 2014, they toured together in Mexico and the United States, giving concerts at the Palacio de Bellas Artes, Chapultepec Castle, and the Sala Nezahualcoyotl in Mexico City, and at Carnegie Hall in New York; all in the first fourteen months of their concert activity.
During the season 2015/16 they toured together for the second time in Mexico, performing at the Casa de Cultura Isla Mujeres, Hacienda Paraíso Komchen, Teatro de la Ciudad Playa del Carmen, Teatro Juan de la Cabada Campeche and at the Teatro Peón Contreras in Mérida.
De Castillo's repertoire includes not only opera, but also German LIed, mélodies and other forms of art songs in seven different languages. They include song cycles such as: Franz Schuberts Schwanengesang, Robert Schumanns Dichterliebe, Gustav Mahlers Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen, Erich Wolfgang Korngolds Songs of the Clown, Hanns Eislers and Ernste Gesänge. He had his debut as Liedersänger at the Schubertiade Mauerbach in 2009 and gave song recitals in Mexico, the United States, Spain, France, England, Italy, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Switzerland, Norway, Slovakia, Poland, Germany, and Austria.
Together with musicologist Professor Dr. Gerold Gruber of the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna, Director of the Research Center M.A.E.D. (Music Analysis and Exile Documentation Research Center), he researched Austrian and German composers who fled to Mexico during World War II. Another focus of their research concerned artists such as Anna Seghers, Egon Kisch, and Marcel Rubin who were helped during the war by Gilberto Bosques, also known as the Mexican Schindler. He helped more than 44,000 people by providing them with visas to Mexico.
He founded the Marcel Rubin Quartet together with Prof. Dr. Gerold Gruber in coordination with the editorial Doblinger and performed with the quartet at: the Maison Heinrich Heine, in Paris, Carnegie Hall in New York, the Theatre of the Schönbrunn Palace, at the Museo Nacional de San Carlos in Mexico City, and at the Kunsthalle Basel.
In 2013, he founded the Primavera Festival which concentrates on the Mexican-Austrian relationship and is a festival against racism and discrimination, and for tolerance and openness. The concerts were held at the concert hall of the United Nations Office at Vienna and at the concert hall of the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna with his chamber orchestra the Valsassina Ensemble. The most important days of the festival were International Women's Day, the day Mexico was the only country to protest the Anschluss (annexation) of Austria by the Third Reich in March 1938, and the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination which is held on 21 March. Their pertoire focused on compositions by composers forced into exile or female composers.
He has collaborated with pianists such as Matthias Lademann, Christian Koch, Jozef Olechowski; Musical Directors like: Jesús López Cobos, Marc Albrecht, Josep Caballé Domenech, and Christof Ulrich Meier; and orchestras including: the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra; and with stage directors such as: Patrice Chéreau, Christof Loy, Torsten Fischer, Emilio Sagi, Paul Esterhazy and Ron Daniels.

Comenzó su carrera musical a la edad de 5 años en un coro de niños en México. Posteriormente en Austria fue aceptado en el “Mozart Sängerknaben” de Viena participando en varias giras por Europa, Sudamérica y el Lejano Oriente. Así mismo participó en varias óperas en la “Wiener Staatsoper” y “Volksoper” y varios festivales por ejemplo: “Wiener Festwochen” con programas como: Carmina Burana, etc.
Al terminar el bachillerato (Matura) en Artes Musicales, decide estudiar Ciencias de la Comunicación y Lenguas Romances También trabajó como jefe de sección en el proyecto “E Card” de la Federación de Seguros en Austria.
En 2007 comienza su estudio en el Instituto de Canto, Música y Teatro de la Universidad de Universidad de Música y Arte Dramático de Viena (en alemán: Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien, abreviado MDW, anteriormente conocido como Hochschule) teniendo como maestros al Director Karlheinz Hanser y a la Subdirectora Gabriele Lechner del mencionado Instituto y al Supervisor Musical del Festival de Bayreuth Christoph Ulrich Meier.
Debuta como solista en el Theater an der Wien en el 2008 al lado de Plácido Domingo y PATRICIA PETIBON, en la Zarzuela “Luisa Fernanda” y en ese mismo teatro tiene entre otras presentaciones, en el 2009 al lado de Christian Gerhaher en la ópera “Der Prinz von Homburg” en el papel de “Wachtmeister”.
En el 2010 canta nuevamente al lado de Plácido Domingo CRISTINA y GALLARDO-DOMÂS en la ópera del compositor mexicano Daniel Catán, “Il Postino” en el papel de “Thug” en el THEATER AN DER WIEN.
En 2011 realiza el papel de "Melibeo" de -Joseph Haydns "La fedeltà premiata" y participa en la Meisterklasse de Christian Gerhaher en el Festival de SWR en Alemania, en la clase magistral para lied finlandés de Anssi Hirvonen– Academia Sibelius, Helsinki, en la apertura del Life Ball en Viena y conciertos de Gustav Mahler con Exil.Arte, etc.
En el 2012 regresa a su ciudad natal Mérida, Yucatán para dedicar el 2012: Año de la Cultura Maya a su país y canta conciertos en el Palacio de Bellas Artes (con Encarnación Vázquez), Museo Nacional de Arte (MUNAL) Foro Cultural de Austria en México, Teatro José Peón Contreras, Teatro Armando Manzanero, Teatro del Centro Cultural de Mérida Olimpo, con la Orquesta de Cámara de Mérida, la Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil de Yucatán y canta la Opereta "Die Fledermaus" de Johann Strauss con la Orquesta Sinfónica de Yucatán
En la temporada 2012/2013 funda la Orquesta de Cámara Valsassina Ensemble (con quien actuará en la temporada 2012/13 en el Wiener Konzerthaus, Wiener Musikverein, etc.) y el Festival "Primavera Festival" en Viena que se enfoca a la protesta mexicana contra la anexión de Austria al Imperio Alemán ante la Sociedad de Naciones y al Diplomatico Gilberto Bosques (también conocido como el 'Schindler mexicano') con conciertos en la Academia diplomática de Viena, el Centro cultural de Baden, Organización de las Naciones Unidas Viena y en la Universidad de Música y Arte Dramático de Viena
A su retorno a Viena tiene su debut en el famoso Musikverein de Viena cantando con la soprano Ildikó Raimondi En el 2013 canta en México en el Palacio de Bellas Artes, esta vez con la soprano mexicana Lourdes Ambriz, en el Teatro Peón Contreras y en Viena en las Naciones Unidas en Viena, en el Museo Liechtenstein, en la Sala Eroica del Palacio Lobwowitz en Viena, en el Palacio Imperial de Hofburg, entre otros.
En 2014 tiene su debut en la Carnegie Hall de Nueva York y canta con su Orquesta Valsassina Ensemble en el Musikverein de Viena, en el Palacio de Bellas Artes de México, en la Sala Nezahualcóyotl, en el Castillo de Chapultepec y en el Teatro Peón Contreras.
Antes de su retorno a Viena canta con el pianista Gavin Gamboa en la sala The Wild Beast del Instituto de Artes de California.
En la temporada '15/16 viaja nuevamente con su Orquesta a México teniendo conciertos en el Teatro Juan de la Cabada Campeche,
Teatro de la Ciudad Playa del Carmen, Casa de la Cultura Isla Mujeres, Hacienda Paraíso Komchen y en el Teatro Peón Contreras Mérida presentando obras del compositor mexicano Roberto Abraham.
Otra de sus cualidades es que su repertorio adicional a la ópera, incluye también "Deutsches Lied", por lo que ha tenido varias “Liederabende” con diferentes ciclos de lied, por ejemplo: Schwanengesang Franz Schubert, Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen Gustav Mahler, Dichterliebe Robert Schumann, etc.
Así mismo se ha presentado en varios conciertos con programas de música popular, internacional y arias, tanto en España, Francia, Italia, República Checa, Suiza, Noruega, Eslovaquia, Polonia, Alemania y Austria.
León funda durante la temporada 2012/2013 su festival dedicado a derechos humanos: PRIMAVERA FESTIVAL WIEN.
Ha trabajado con Directores Musicales como: Jesús López Cobos, Marc Albrecht, Josep Caballé-Domenech, Christoph Ulrich Meier, etc. Orquestas como: Orquesta Sinfónica de Viena, Orquesta Sinfónica de la Radio de Viena, Sinfonietta Baden, etc. y Directores de Escena como:Patrice Chéreau, Christof Loy, Torsten Fischer, Emilio Sagi, Ron Daniels etc. pianistas como: Matthias Lademann, Christian Koch, Jozef Olechowski, Marcin Koziel, Ulrike Mell, Alberto Álvarez, etc
